Why use enterprise architecture?

In this note

Key takeaways

  • Business needs and strategy establish the purpose of architecture.
  • An enterprise scope can include several organizations.
  • Architecture supports choices; its value is measured through the consequences of those choices.
01

An enterprise is more than one company

An enterprise is a collection of organizations that share objectives. Its scope may be a company, several public bodies, a supply chain, or a consortium. Architecture scope is chosen according to the problem being addressed; it does not automatically match a legal boundary or the IT department.

Enterprise architecture helps transform fragmented processes and systems into capabilities consistent with strategy. It considers current operations alongside future change. A fast customer portal cannot deliver its full value if business rules, information, and responsibilities remain incompatible across the organization.

02

Decisions guided by value

Expected benefits include better decisions, greater agility, more efficient operations, more focused investment, and more coherent procurement. Architecture makes trade-offs between cost, risk, reuse, and speed explicit. These benefits should be connected to observable outcomes rather than to the number of diagrams produced. The Open Group develops open standards and promotes Boundaryless Information Flow: enabling information to flow across organizational boundaries.

  • Clarify shared objectives and the stakeholders involved.
  • Consider existing assets alongside transformation needs.
  • Use standards and collaboration to support information sharing across boundaries.
